Tarot 101: The Court Cards

The Court Cards are the 16 personality cards of the Tarot. Each suit has four: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. They often represent people, roles, or ways of approaching a situation. Beginners often find them confusing, but once you understand the progression, they become one of the clearest tools for reading energy and relationships.

Pages: Curiosity & Learning

  • Role: The student or beginner.
  • Themes: curiosity, messages, starting fresh.
  • Pages show the early stages of learning or exploring in their suit’s area.
  • Example: Page of Wands = exploring creativity, trying new projects.
  • Example: Page of Cups = new feelings, first crush, intuitive hunch.

Knights: Action & Change

  • Role: The mover or pursuer.
  • Themes: action, momentum, exploration.
  • Knights show energy in motion: chasing goals, diving into challenges, or sometimes acting impulsively.
  • Example: Knight of Swords = rushing into action, debate, urgency.
  • Example: Knight of Pentacles = steady effort, long-term commitment.

Queens: Mastery Through Experience

  • Role: The nurturer and guide.
  • Themes: maturity, depth, influence, emotional intelligence.
  • Queens show inner mastery: understanding, embodying, and sharing the wisdom of their suit. They’re less about outward authority and more about modeling balance.
  • Example: Queen of Cups = empathy, compassion, emotional depth.
  • Example: Queen of Swords = clarity, honesty, wise communication.

Kings: Authority & Responsibility

  • Role: The leader or decision-maker.
  • Themes: authority, control, mastery, external influence.
  • Kings represent outer mastery: applying knowledge to take charge and shape outcomes. They can show leadership, responsibility, or the established structures in your life.
  • Example: King of Wands = visionary leadership, confidence, charisma.
  • Example: King of Pentacles = financial security, stability, providing for others.

Why They Matter

The Court Cards show roles, personalities, or approaches. Pages are learners, Knights are movers, Queens embody wisdom, and Kings direct outcomes. When they appear in a reading, they can describe you, someone else in your life, or the energy you’re being asked to step into.

The Court Cards bring personality into Tarot. Pages explore, Knights pursue, Queens embody, and Kings lead. They remind you that Tarot isn’t just about events or lessons, it’s also about how different roles and approaches shape your experience.
